Motion by Dr MEHREEN FARUQI agreed to:
- (1) That this House notes that:
- (a) the Depilex Smile Again Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation in Pakistan which was set up in 2005 to help women victims and survivors of acid and oil burns by providing them with medical attention, reconstructive surgery, psychological and psychiatric support, shelter and vocational training;
- (b) representatives of the Depilex Smile Again Foundation Pakistan were in Sydney on 6 June 2015 to create awareness about violence against women in Pakistan, especially the heinous gender-specific crime of acid and kerosene oil burning of young girls and women, and to raise funds for reconstructive surgery for women survivors of acid attacks; and
- (c) women across the globe, shamefully, suffer the terror of domestic violence every day.
- (2) That this House acknowledges the Depilex Smile Again Foundation for its advocacy, its education to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and for its commitment to the rehabilitation of victims through reconstructive surgery, support and provision of vocational training.
